Another JustRite Friday Challenge has been posted today and the challenge is Frugal Friday -- to recycle and reuse something from around your house and give it renewed life as a frugal gift idea! Here’s my recycled spice jar, jazzed up and made pretty for gift giving to a friend who loves gourmet French cooking (front and back of jar) -- click on any photo for a larger view:
The labels, which match Spellbinders Labels Six (above left) and Labels Four (above right) were airbrushed with Copic markers.
I kept seeing a gourmet South of France blend of spices mentioned in some recipes called Herbes de Provence, but could never find the blend in my local grocery store. Online shopping turned up some results, but most were quite expensive. Since I already had most of the individual spices in the blend, I Googled how to create my own and found MANY mixture recipes! I created my own blend (recipe at the bottom of this post) and transferred the spices to this nice, large 3oz. recycled spice jar (Target's Archer Farms brand, in case you are wondering!).
And what more perfect stamp set is there for a French blend of spices than JustRite's new cling stamp sets, Bon Voyage and Greetings From Paris! Here are the sides of the jar:
(Left photo above): Eiffel Tower is from the Bon Voyage set; (right photo above): Fleur de Lis is from Spellbinders Fleur de Lis Accents die set, die cut from vanilla cardstock and colored with Copic markers.
And the lid is a collage of stamps mostly from JustRite's Greetings From Paris stamp set, die cut with Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Circle Nestabilities:
Here's the blend of herbs I came up with (yields a little over 1/2 cup, which almost filled this 3oz. jar):
Herbs de Provence custom blend:
2 powdered or chopped Bay Leaves
1 Tbl Basil
1 Tbl Chervil
1-1/2 Tbl Marjoram
1 tsp Oregano
1 Tbl Rosemary
1-1/2 Tbl Summer Savory
1-1/2 Tbl Thyme
Enjoy! If you'd like to enter a project for JustRite's challenge, you can find all the details, including Spellbinders sponsored prize package here!
