Welcome back to our second day of MFT's May Release Countdown . . . Be sure to head over to the MFT Blog to see today’s full stamp set and die reveals! Today the design team is featuring one of my favorite new MFT stamp lines, Birdie Brown, in her new stamp set, Let's Hang Out:
She reminds me SO much of my oldest tomboy daughter, so I wanted to create a Father's Day card for her to give her Daddy! I kept the colors of the card masculine, using blues and greens.
I have a Copic tutorial for you, on how I colored Birdie (click on photos for larger views):
1. Stamp girl with Black Licorice Hybrid Ink onto Copic X-Press It Blending Card die cut with coordinating Let's Hang Out Die-namics. Color the overalls in a base coat of B32, then add medium shading with B34. Leave fold marks in overall legs white (uncolored) or create the creases by using Copic Colorless Blender marker to push away color from those areas.
2. Blend the shading (B34) into the B32 base coat, using lightest B32. Add deeper shading to pockets and far edges with darkest B37.
3. Place Copic Colorless Blending Solution in a mister bottle and mist the Linen background stamp. Quickly (before Blender evaporates) press the colored piece face down onto the Linen background stamp and then lift straight up off the stamp. You don't want to leave the colored piece laying too long on the stamp, or the Blender Solution may remove too much of your coloring -- you want it to create the linen texture on the overalls. I was able to see the pattern of the Linen stamp come through to the back side of my colored girl pretty quickly and knew that was long enough!
4. Base color skin with E00 and add shading with E11. Use E00 to blend the two together.
5. My favorite colors for creating medium blonde hair start with Y21, then add shading in E33 and a little E35 (not shown).
6. Color shirt with YG25; add shading with darker YG17.
7. Base color hat with lightest YG25, add mid-tone shading with YG25, then deepest shading with YG17.
8. Overall buttons and shoes were colored with C1, C3 and tire with the T-series (T2,3,5,7).
It was quick and easy to create the stitched panel background for my card front with the new Horizontal (or Vertical!) Stitched Stips Die-namics! I chose these colors of heavyweight cardstock: Gumdrop Green, Sour Apple (with Linen background stamped in Gumdrop Green Hybrid ink) and Berrylicious stamped with Linen background in Blu Raspberry Hybrid ink. The sentiment from CS Fathers (currently available, not a new release) was stamped in Back Licorice Hybrid ink.
To finish the inside of cards I like to keep the stamping fairly light, so your written words are more the focus. So I stamped the tree with BRAND NEW (coming next week) Natural Hybrid Ink (love this color!) onto the Smooth White card base and lightly colored the leaves with Copic YG01 and G40. The sentiment was stamped with Sour Apple Hybrid ink. This sentiment SO reminds me of my husband and oldest daughter -- they really are like two peas in a pod and DO totally get each other, so it's perfect for them!
A quick tip for getting the look of dimensional background grass is to color the same cardstock color you use for the foreground grass a shade or two darker with a Copic marker. Here, I used G43 on Spearmint cardstock cut with Grassy Edges Die-namics -- keeping the inside cardstock colors lighter than the card front's Sour Apple grass colored with YG23 Copic.
I also whipped up a coordinating gift tag or bookmark with some leftover pieces:
I used the largest new Vertical Stitched Strips Die-namics to create the tag/bookmark base (it measures 2" x 5.25"), added the ladder from Let's Hang Out stamp set and coordinating Die-namics (die cut from Natural cardstock, shaded with a little Copic E30) and another great sentiment from the Fathers stamp set and tied it with hemp cord.
I think we're all set now for Father's Day!
