Welcome to a Fall seasonal salute to Art Squares that will take you to 11 different creative blogs, beginning with the CardMaker blog and ending at the All In An Inch blog.
These larger sizes open up a Pandora's box of creative opportunity, including using larger stamped images and new mediums such as acrylic paints and mixed media, watercolor, Pan Pastels, inks, sprays, color sticks and encaustic. The new larger sizes also give papercrafters the opportunity to explore using them with all kinds of new techniques! And...we now call them Art Squares!
As the new larger sizes were introduced, it was increasingly confusing that all of them were being referred to as "inchies". To simplify things, all of the precision cut matboard sizes are now called Art Squares, with the different sizes clearly marked on the packaging. Of course, you can still get Inchie Squares (1-inch), Inchie Plus (1.50") Squares, and Twinchie (2") Squares, in addition to the new larger sizes!
Some of my favorite things to do with Art Squares is to emboss them with dies -- just run them through your die cutting machine with the low profile die of your choice, using your normal cutting sandwich. The matboard Art Square is too thick for the low profile die to cut it, and leaves beautiful embossing:
The beautiful stitched embossed detail can be seen on the Art Square below. Next, I heat embossed the pretty leaves and acorns from this new Essentials by Ellen Autumn Acorns stamp set with gold embossing powder. The Art Square holds up nicely to both types of embossing, without warping!
Next, I colored the images with these Copic markers. The Art Squares hold up very well to the Copic alcohol ink, also allowing for very nice blending and shading!
You can see the background of my Art Square is now Ivory because I colored it with the E30 and E31 markers. Berries were stamped with Memento Sweet Plum ink. The finished Art Square was mounted with Copic Foam Tape to the tag shaped card, adding gold metallic thread behind it:
