Time again for the My Favorite Things Design Team monthly Creative Challenge! MFT's line of Die-namics cuts such a wide variety of materials. This month, the team's challenge was to put dies to use with MFT's Cork Sheets. We hope to craft some cards and projects you’ll want to stick a pin in for inspiration you'll return to over and over!
My cork project for you today is a set of four holiday drink coasters!
The Cork sheets cut extremely well with MFT's dies -- as you can see with the variety of intricate die shapes I used! Here are the easy steps:
TUTORIAL
1. I started by die cutting the Cork Sheets eight times with the largest Circle STAX 1 Die-namics (which measures about 4" -- perfect for a coaster!). Four of those circles will be die cut again and the other four circles will remain solid -- to give my coasters a double layer of stability and also to have a base circle on which to adhere all the die cut pieces together.
Here's a look at my assembly process:
2. After die cutting the circles, I then ran a circle back through my Big Shot with the decorative die(s) I wanted to make that particular coaster. In this case, the Transformables Heart Full of Love die.
3. Next, I masked off the area I didn't want Sweet Tooth Pigment Ink and then applied the ink pad directly to the area I DID want white. I repeated the masking process if I used the gold or silver pigment inks. For the Love coaster, I applied gold pigment ink all over the rest of the circle around the heart.
4. Then for the red heart, I colored Copic R24 directly onto the cork. The Copics color the cork very nicely -- just keep in mind your color will probably appear darker on the cork, so be sure to test out your color of choice first.
5. Finally, after the inked cork was dry, I applied liquid glue all over a solid die cut circle and started fitting the die cut circles back together on top of the glue circle ... easy peasy!
Here's a closer look at the finished Love coaster:
For the Merry coaster, I used the new Merry Die-namics. The holly is from MFT's Christmas Ornaments Die-namics set. The circle was colored with Copic R24. For the leaves and between the Merry word, G07 marker was used. The Merry word and holly berries were colored with the same gold pigment ink as above. I think this one looks like a Christmas ornament!
The Peace coaster was created with the new Peace-Love-Joy Die-namics and Tree Lines. I colored the Peace word with Copic RV55, for a dark pink color and the trees were colored with YG23. The snow was colore with MFT's Sweet Tooth Pigment Ink and the rest of the circle was colored with silver pigment ink:
Finally, the Joy coaster was created with the new Pierced Snowflakes Die-namics and the Peace-Love-Joy Die-namics. See how well the snowflake holes all cut out of the cork -- amazing! It was colored with Sweet Tooth Pigment Ink and I decided to leave the holes out of the snowflake when re-assembling it. I sprinkled glitter in the holes, so it would attach to the liquid glue and give a nice festive sparkle to the coaster! The Joy word was striped with RV55 Copic marker and the rest of the circle colored with silver pigment ink pad.
Thanks so much for joining me today -- I hope you'll give this Cork coaster project a try! You can find a list of all the designers participatng in today's hop over on the MFT Blog -- I know they all have some fabulous Cork projects for you!
