Make Your Own Drink Coasters-Updated!

If you are a long-time reader of my blog, you've seen me make many custom drink coasters ... I love the originality and being able to customize them! I am very happy to report that I've found some different products (other than I've used in the past: Copic Various Ink Refill coasters and Copic Markers) that work great for this purpose -- Kirarina 2win Oil-based markers!

These 2win Oil-based pens are available in 18 color varieties. Each pen is dual-tipped and features TWO original Kirarina colors! 2win oil-based pens include round nibs on both ends, with the exception of the Black marker which has a round nib on one end and fine nib on either end. They are also:

Acid-free
Available in 5 or 8-piece sets
Stick to any surface
2 colors in each pen
Fine nib for detailed work (black marker)

To make my coaster, first I prepped a 4-inch unglazed tumbled marble tile (found at the home improvement store) by wiping the surface with an alcohol wipe. This step just removes any excess dust or oil from the tile. If you don't have an alcohol wipe, you could just wet a paper towel with rubbing alcohol.
(Below, I photographed the back of my tile because I forgot to take a photo of this step before making my tile, so that's why it looks a little more rough and different than my finished tile!)

Next, I used Ranger Jet Black Archival Ink to stamp Essentials by Ellen Bohemian Garden flowers onto the tile. In the past, I usually used Memento Tuxedo Black (or any of Memento's dye-based inks) and that ink works just fine, too.

The colors of Kirarina 2win Oil-based markers I used were: Raspberry, Marigold, Muscat, Emerald, Aqua, and Grape. The beauty of this marker is that you get two DIFFERENT colors in the same pen! Below, I've colored a chart so you can see both colors that are in each pen:

Then I had fun coloring my stamped tile! Just to be on the safe side, I was careful to try and not touch any of the stamped lines with the marker tips (which is almost virtually impossible!). I noticed that really only the yellow Kirarina 2win slightly smeared the stamped ink if I went over the stamped lines.

Since I prefer my coasters to remain absorbent, I don't seal them with anything. Therefore, I wanted to test the colorfastness if the ink and markers were exposed to a lot of water. So I poured on some water . . . !
